Rose-Marie
lived most of her life in South Africa and moved to New Zealand at age 79 to join her son and family. She was a painter of
oils and watercolour. Having lived mostly in South Africa, she has spent a lifetime dedicated to art. Rose-Marie
always painted under her maiden name, Budler, but her married name was Rose-Marie Jensen.
She
held a number of exhibitions in the Eastern Cape, South Africa after retirement from the Cape Education Department. Her
final farewell exhibition prior to leaving for New Zealand was held in Port Elizabeth in 2004.
Rose-Marie was born in a small village, Kestell,
in South Africa in 1925 and attended school in the nearby town of Zastron after her family moved there when she was five years
old. From an early age, Rose-Marie took an interest in painting, encouraged by her Aunt 'Florrie' (Florence Allsop). The town
of Zastron is close to the border of the landlocked nation, Lesotho. After completing her schooling, she left to study
at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. After graduating with a BA (Fine Arts) Honours, Rose-Marie held various art teaching
posts at large educational institutions in South Africa. During this time she gained prominence as a painter of oil paintings
with a distinct African theme. Her work was strongly influenced by the colourful Basotho tribal people in Lesotho. Some
of her works of traditional Basotho people are still exhibited in national galleries in South Africa (e.g. Ann Bryant Gallery,
East London). In 1958, Rose-Marie was a founder member of the Bloemfontein group, a group of well known South African artists
such as Frans Claerhout (www.claerhout.biz), Eben van der Merwe and the Podlashucs. In
1969 after years of teaching, she was offered a position by the Cape Education Department, as Art Inspectress
of Schools in a large area of the Eastern Cape, which she accepted. The schools included both primary and high schools,
and she had to travel large distances to visit all of them, including some of the more remote parts of the country. She was
required to meet with the school principal and art teachers at each school to review the quality of art and art teaching in
the schools, and then to report back to the Education Department. She also offered guidance and assistance to the school art
teachers, demonstrating teaching methods and techniques. This helped develop her keen interest in child
art and also earn a regular income, but she still painted in her spare time and was involved with various
art groups. In about 1960 she became a member of the Eastern Province Society of Arts and Crafts (EPSAC), after exhibiting
her work with the society prior to that. She continued to exhibit her work until she left Port Elizabeth to live
in New Zealand in 2004. Rose-Marie retired in 1985 which allowed her to focus on her painting.
New Zealand proved to be a new source of inspiration. Since moving to
NZ in late 2004, Rose-Marie continued to paint oils including still lifes, traditional African themes and South Island
NZ landscapes. She also produced many watercolours, mainly landscapes and exhibited in a number of exhibitions in and around
Canterbury. Rose-Marie's enthuisiasm for painting continued until she passed away peacefully on 18 October 2014 at age 89.
